A film with topless women is played for about a minute
Someone unzipped a man’s pants revealing his penis however it is hard to make out
A man is seen fully naked running on the beach.

A very graphic rape scene. Genitals briefly shown. Can be very disturbing and lasts several minutes, but can easily be skipped over
A woman is seen dead, apparently having been sodomized with a flute. It’s then implied, though not shown, that another woman was sodomized with a broom.

Film review:Translated by www.rabudo-ru.com

This film created by three film academy students in Belgium may not be a real forbidden film. Only Sweden is forbidden to film this film in western countries, but the subversive power contained in this film may be more terrible than those real forbidden films

My friend once said that after watching this film, I couldn’t see other films for a long time, and the same feeling appeared on me. The idea of darkness and despair conveyed in the film is like a noose – I have to say that this black-and-white pseudo documentary subverts everything in the world and even the film art itself

In 1989, R é my belvaux and Andr é BONZEL, students of InAs film school in Brussels, planned to make a different film. Later, their friend Benoit poelvoorde joined them as one of the editors and directors and finally starred in the film. Due to the lack of funds, the shooting idea of man bites dog was put on hold for two and a half years. Finally, the three young people collected the necessary funds through the fund-raising of the French community of Brussels and their own working savings, and completed the shooting of the film in six weeks. In order to save money, all the characters in the film are played by their relatives and friends.

After many twists and turns, the film was finally staged. This independent film with a cost of only $15000 created a miracle in Belgian film history. The box office performance of “man biting dog” ranked only behind the American Hollywood blockbuster “deadly weapon 3”, becoming the most commercially successful Belgian film in that year. As another Belgian film, Toto the hero, won the Golden Palm Award just a year ago, man biting the dog failed to win the crown in Cannes, but it caused a great sensation during the film festival. The audience came in an endless stream, and the organizers even needed to use the police force to maintain the order of the cinema.

From the first act of the movie, “people bite dogs” will insult your nerves and strangle your throat. When we see a middle-aged man, bellot, the hero of the film, strangle a female passenger with a rope on the train, we will also be surprised to find that a team of filmmakers are following and filming the whole process of his murder. Then we will see Belot talking to the camera lens while dealing with the corpse. He will introduce his experience in dealing with the corpse and how to make the corpse never surface after sinking into the water – we will know that if a certain proportion of heavy objects are attached to the corpse, the corpse can sink to the bottom of the water forever until it rots, including men, women, children The proportion of the weight between the old man’s body and the dwarf’s body and the attached weight varies. Do you need such a “life” experience?

According to normal logic, the audience will instinctively look for who the female passenger is, why Belot killed her and how to promote the plot. But in fact, everything about the female passenger did not appear in the film again. She just existed as one of the countless victims killed by the killer Belot. Because as the film advances, we will find that the thin Belot is a serial killer. He kills and dismembers a large number of people without feeling or even jokingly, and the film crew composed of three young filmmakers will follow him to faithfully record everything.

Throughout the film, we will hear Belot’s chatter. Through those conversations, we will find that this guy is not only a cold-blooded killer, but also an amateur artist proficient in aesthetic theory, a high-level pianist, an extreme nationalist who knows all kinds of philosophical schools, and an insightful sociologist, In addition, he is a biologist and lyric writer who has a lot of research on animal reproductive behavior.

We will also find that he has two lovers, one is a 60 year old woman and the other is a girl in her 20s. Among them, the latter is a flute player. She was the partner of Belot’s music performance since childhood. After that, Belot gave up his music career and became a killer, and used his income from killing as the girl’s lover and art supporter.

At first, the three filmmakers were just loyal recorders. They calmly filmed Belot’s killing one after another, met relatives and friends, met lovers, and quietly listened to Belot’s boasting about philosophy, urban planning, killing art and so on. The first time they changed their identity from a photographer to a subject was after Belot killed a black man, when one of the crew appeared in front of the camera and acted as a corpse carrier. So far, the pseudo documentary has fallen into a completely out of control situation – if they were calm observers and recorders of Belot’s murder before, they have become accomplices to the murderers, which also makes the audience who watch the pseudo documentary begin to be overwhelmed.

Because the film was disguised as a documentary at the beginning, and the audience naturally ran to occupy the photographer’s position, identified with the camera, and observed those bloody violence from this perspective. But when the audience finds that the photographer also runs to the camera to drink and chat with Belot, rape and rob, kill and transport the body, the audience will completely lose their self-positioning.

As we know, there are usually three attitudes towards the audience. One is the positive attitude of stitching the audience into the narrative structure of the film, one is the neutral attitude that the audience cannot agree with anyone on the screen, and the other is the negative attitude that the audience is separated from the specified situation of the film. These three attitudes are very respectful of the audience. And “people bite dogs” is a film that does not respect the audience. It has ulterior motives for the audience. It gradually introduces the audience into a complete delirium of cognitive confusion, and makes the audience lose their judgment on the basis of human nature, artistic principles, moral rationality and so on.

As the film continues to deepen, the audience will find that their identity will be replaced by an accomplice – at first, the audience thought they were an uninvolved camera, but later found that there was no such position, so the audience had to go to the killer and become an accomplice.

In the scene of killing a family of three, Belot cruelly twisted the male host’s neck, and the audience was forced to listen to the click of the broken neck. This was a terrible listening – the audience suddenly found that they were about to become violent. At this time, the moral principle and happiness principle of the film worked at the same time: the moral principle made the audience instinctively identify with the weak, The principle of happiness allows the audience to enjoy the rights of the strong subconsciously. When the members of the film crew led by Remy gradually changed from a submissive accomplice to an accomplice who gang raped women with the killer and was drunk on the ground, they wantonly deceived and seduced the audience (or did the audience subconsciously become Belot’s accomplice at this time?).

The film introduces a crisis when Belot’s family receives a dead mouse. Belot was finally killed by the Avengers. At this time, the audience was shocked. As a disguised documentary, how to shoot after the killer died. The audience’s perspective immediately returned to the back of the camera. With the director Remy was killed, the camera was slowly placed on the ground. The photographer tried to escape and run into the picture at the last moment, but he also failed to escape the fate of being killed. So far, the audience of the film has completely lost their identity – the audience has also been killed by the film? Because all creators are killed in the process of their artistic creation, the film works also do not need the audience.

The film ends with the end of the object, that is, the end of the film, which once again reaffirms the supremacy of the image.

A plot in the film is worth pondering. While the recorder was killed, the filmmakers began to nag that “our film is running out of funds”. It turned out that the shooting of the film was carried out with the support of the killer, and its funds came from the stolen money from the killing, so the image had to degenerate into an accomplice to violence – in order to complete their own artistic creation.

The death of all the protagonists and creators in this pseudo documentary also makes this pseudo documentary a film with the darkest theme.

As mentioned earlier, Belot’s young lover’s art career also needs Belot’s support. The beautiful and bright lyric music played by the two people runs through the whole process of the film, forming a huge ironic effect

• why do people paint bricks in the street red? Red is blood, Indian and violent. “—— Belot’s monologue tells us that the killer is probably the most sober in this violent world.

• the natural intimacy between violence and the film was exposed. Violent fetishism is born to belong to the film, just as peeping fetishism is born to belong to the audience. It is precisely because of the audience’s potential abuse and self abuse complex that the violence on the screen has become a very popular ornamental spectacle. If we say that the violent scenes in taxi driver, big man, vulgar novel and mentally ill startle us, the fact is that there is no lack of violence in human society from beginning to end. However, due to moral constraints, people can’t show endless interest in this, and the film has to degenerate before the audience for its own survival. Vivian sobcek said that violence is “the meaning and connotation of our moral spasm”. This rationality is rare on today’s screen, and its frequency just proves that it does not exist. (comments from netizens)

• when people enter the post capitalist era, they are already familiar with the romantic heroic aestheticism violence brought by John Woo, the bloody and cruel action violence created by Quentin Tarantino and Takeshi Kitano. The occasional and meaningless violence in man biting dog makes people feel a kind of black humor and an attitude towards the violent film itself. Violence must be a good element for film and television works to sell themselves. However, whether the film should express violence in an illusory way or in a sincere way, whether it is intended to arouse the audience’s desire to imitate, or reduce the audience’s fresh mystery of violence itself, “people bite dogs” may unconsciously make such an exploration. The view of young film makers is that the film not only has the advantage of expressing the process of violence in content, but also the image itself is a violent means of cheating and playing with the audience. What we need to do is to recognize this and use it to create interesting and thoughtful films. (Daniel comments)

• Andre, the producer of “people bite dogs”, clearly pointed out that the purpose of the film is: it can make people laugh, and after laughing, it can make people reflect on why they still laugh when they see such cruel content.

• watching the whole movie makes me feel like drinking a bucket of swill! Can you understand how I feel? It’s gloomy, nausea and uncomfortable all over. Don’t say too much. If you have the opportunity, it is suggested that friends who have uncontrollable interest in murder and enough psychological tolerance can find it. This film is a good multimedia murder textbook. Of course, general female friends suggest watching it when male parents (of course, this is unrealistic) or other stronger men are present to share psychological pressure!
