People familiar with Hollywood know that the 1950s was the most glorious golden age of old Hollywood. Countless classic works were born throughout the 1950s: Sunset Boulevard, song in the rain, noon, Roman holiday, wild man, seven-year itch, 12 angry man and searcher.

“Marty” is one of the classic works in the golden age of the 1950s. Like the work “little fugitive” (all in 1953) in the same year, it uses an extremely simple and simple plot to complete an extremely fascinating story, which makes people have to beat the case. Coincidentally, these two films have also won foreign appreciation: Marty won the golden palm of Cannes Film Festival, and little fugitive won the Venice Silver Lion Award.

The story of Marty is very simple: Marty is an older young man who sells meat. His siblings have married, but he is still single. Every elder nags in his ear: Marty, why haven’t you married yet? Weekend is his most difficult day. He has no job and no girlfriend. He can only do nothing with his other group of single friends. Until he met a single female teacher by chance, they became friends at first sight and had a very speculative conversation. But Marty’s mother didn’t like the girl because she was worried that she would dominate her son, and Marty’s friends didn’t like her because Marty didn’t go out with her friends for her. Depressed Marty didn’t know what to do, and finally fell into boredom again. He suddenly woke up and felt that such a life was wrong, so he called the girl again regardless of his friend’s obstruction, and the film ended.

It is this simple story that can’t be simpler, but it is full of exciting power under the director’s narration. The audience is deeply seized by Marty’s fate and fascinated by this kind, simple, ugly (even a little ugly) boy. In fact, just as it was later said that the little fugitive inspired the new wave of France and truffer’s four hundred, Marty is undoubtedly a work full of realism. The film is mainly composed of long scenes (such as Marty’s phone call and a quarrel with Marty and her mother at the dinner table). The whole story is close to the life of civilians, just like the story of an older youth next door. Most importantly, this realistic temperament does not affect the entertainment and viewing of the film. The rhythm of the whole story makes people feel very comfortable.

Finally, I would like to point out that like the little fugitive, this film is set in a single parent family with only a mother and no father. I have specially analyzed the “father seeking theme” in the little fugitive, but it is obviously inappropriate to use this concept to analyze Marty. Marty’s single parent family did not particularly affect Marty’s character. In fact, his mother was quite tolerant and open-minded, but the shadow of the single parent family still affected Marty’s love.

As a mirror image of Marty, Marty’s cousin is actually another married “Marty”. He desperately warned Marty not to get married because he was upset by his wife’s quarrel with his single mother. The single mother has lost her husband, so she can only live with her son (and daughter-in-law), which has seriously affected the normal life between husband and wife. Marty’s cousin had to send her mother to Marty’s house, and the old lady frantically complained to Marty’s mother that “when her son has a daughter-in-law, she doesn’t want a mother”, which finally changed Marty’s mother’s concept and made her prejudiced against Marty’s girlfriend.

In short, although the overall style of the film is a relaxed comedy, the final story also stops abruptly when Marty calls his future girlfriend (or even his wife). However, cousin Marty’s personal experience has been deeply cast into the film as a shadow, which makes people worry about Marty’s future married life. Can he finally be happy? Therefore, the story also has a sad tone.

This sad tone seems to be vaguely reflected in Hollywood films throughout the 1950s. Not to mention the anti Western Westerns noon, the wild man and the searcher, they are comedies. Roman holiday and the seven-year itch are not so happy, but full of anxiety about love and family responsibilities. Perhaps more expressive are the two sensational family melodramas “rebellion without cause” and “east of Eden” in 1955, both of which are family tragedies caused by a cowardly and untrustworthy father.

The 1950s is far from the vigorous anti-cultural movement of the 1960s and 1970s, but this absence from the parents, or the family breakdown caused by the incompetence of the parents, or the lack of traditional values, has been shown in many Hollywood films. Although this kind of performance is still very euphemistic and ambiguous, and although the overall style is still a positive comedy story, the heavy shadow, as shown in the film Marty, has been deeply engraved in the bones of the film.
