#Love

There’s a scene in the movie: Sid and Nancy are lying in bed feebly. He suddenly asks, how long haven’t we done it. Nancy said, as long as you want, we can… Sid thought about it and wanted to say, you’d better kiss me. Then the camera turns to the picture on this poster. Nancy leaned back against a dustbin in the street and kissed Sid. At this time, garbage slowly fell from the air around them, like strange flowers.

This is the most tender and calm scene of the film. At that moment, I forgot that they were punks and thought they were hippies earlier, lovers hiding in the trash can.

Sid vicious, the bass player of the sex pistols of the most famous British punk band, formerly John Simon Ritchie Beverly (Beverly comes from his stepfather), moved around with his mother who sold narcotic drugs illegally since childhood. In 1974, he met John Lydon (later changed to Johnny rotten), the lead singer of the sex pistols. Later, he changed his name to Sid vicious, which was taken from the evil SID, a biting pet mouse of John Lydon. In 75, Sid began to have the tendency of self mutilation and antisocial emotions, which are typical punk characteristics. It was Sid’s punk attitude and his slim and lovely appearance that, although he was not good at playing bass, he was also attracted by the punk Godfather Malcolm, the agent of the sex pistol, who strongly invited him to join his favorite band. In 1977, Sid joined the sex pistol. That’s the year he met Nancy.

Nancy Spungen was born into a Jewish middle-class family in the United States, but at the age of 17, she ran away from home and went to New York. There, she became a flesh and blood (gropie, a woman who fooled around with the band) and followed aerosmiths, the new york dolls, the Ramones and other bands. For a while, she made a living by dancing strip and occasionally prostitution. It can be said that Nancy is a very bad girl. She is not beautiful and has a bad temper. She looks young and old because of drug addiction. Later, she went to London, where she met Sid.

As the title shows, < Sid & Nancy > tells the story between them. People often call this the punk version of Romeo and Juliet, but Sid and nancy do not resist the resistance of their parents or society to pursue true love and a better life. They mix together, and no one has time to take care of their affairs. Unlike other famous couples in the history of rock and roll, such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, John lenneo and Yoko Ono, Kurt Cobain and Countney love, Sid and Nancy are like two reptiles at the bottom of society who voluntarily and humbly survive and destroy themselves step by step. In my opinion, they are more like Bonnie and Clyde. They have no tomorrow.

It’s a little strange how Sid likes Nancy. When they met in the film, there was no spark at all, no ambiguous eyes. After one performance, they slept together, but nothing happened. Only Sid murmured to himself like a dream. Sex was so boring. Later, Nancy cheated Sid of his money to buy drugs. A few days later, she ran into Sid by mistake. They injected and slept together. When Nancy woke up and left consciously, Sid caught her, and then they were together. The reality is probably not like this. Because of his mother, Sid was addicted to drugs in 1975. He won’t be a person who doesn’t know where to buy drugs when he meets Nancy. However, one thing is clear that their combination is not as wonderful as secular romance and love at first sight, but the same smell.

Although this is a story of two people, which is often a scene of two people together, the focus obviously lies in Sid. Because he is SID, an early fallen punk idol. There is a scene in the film where Sid covers the famous jazz song my way. There are well-dressed adults under the stage and a punk shouting on the stage. The audience is sitting and giving applause and cheers. This is the most ironic scene in the film. Do they really like punk? But my way is suitable for people like SID, just like Frank Sinatra, the gang boss of friends, the traitor in good guy and everyone in swallowtail butterfly. He was the worst in the eyes of the guardians of that era. He continued the spirit of idols such as James Dean, “live fast, die early, and leave a beautiful body”. Many people hold this idea, but many people live to be old, and Sid unfortunately did it.

The film was released in 1986. It has been ten years since the beginning of punk. Sid’s bones have been cold for a long time. Most of the so-called punk music and punk spirit have rotted in the arms of Commerce. Alex Cox’s work was praised by most media at that time. Occasionally, several said that he beautified drugs or distorted some facts. He didn’t get much support when he started the plan. People mostly laughed and ridiculed, because the times had changed long ago. Sid’s mother also opposed the film with the theme of her son’s experience at the beginning. However, after meeting Alex Cox, she was persuaded. I don’t know how much enthusiasm, reason or interest Alex used to persuade the mother. She even took out some relics of SID as props, such as the iconic collar and padlock. Then Alex found someone close to the same-sex pistol as a consultant, so he can generally solve the details of clothing and the place of the story.

To some extent, the success of the film is that the two roles choose the right actors. Gary Oldman, his appearance and figure are very similar to Sid, and his performance is more like a God. Chloe Webb starred in Nancy, and her performance also won praise, strong and convincing. In the film, they have to be in various situations under drug abuse and angry but powerless punk state for a long time. This is not a simple thing, but oldman and Webb have done well. Originally, Countney love was also interested in Nancy’s role and asked her to estimate that it was just a natural performance. However, considering the performance experience, the producer only asked her to play another small role in it.

#Kills

On October 12, 1978, in room 100, Chelsea Hotel, West Street, New York, as shown in the scene at the beginning of the film, Sid woke up and found Nancy lying in the bathroom. He called 911 and then sat on the bed. What happened that night is now unknown. Maybe it was made in the film. Maybe, as people speculate, a drug dealer had a dispute with Nancy. Sid once said, “I killed her because I’m a dirty dog”. He also wrote a poem for Nancy:

You were my little baby girl,

And I shared all your fears.

Such joy to hold you in my arms

and kiss away your tears.

But now you’re gone, there’s only pain

and nothing I can do.

And I don’t want to live this life,

If I can’t live for you.

To my beautiful baby girl.

Our love will never die…

Sid once said in the film, “I can’t live without you”. It’s a very old-fashioned love words and lines, but it’s his voice. On February 1, 1979, his partners held a party to celebrate his release on bail. Sid took some heroin from his mother. The next morning, he was found to have overdosed and died.

Maybe it should be said like the movie, love killing the dead.
