Compared with strangers by the lake, keep upright is more ambitious. It tries to show the identity crisis of “men”.

Gender

The main characters in the film are divided by gender

Male: infant (son of LEO) – juvenile – Youth (LEO) – middle age (father-in-law) – old age

Female: daughter – wife – mother (Mary has all three identities)

Leo, as the central figure, starts the description of the “male” four identities. These four identities were initially expressed separately with four independent clues.

Structure

1. Power identity (old man – Leo – teenager)

Leo drove along, with a young man walking alone and an old man sitting in front of his house.

Old man: own real estate Leo: own a car teenager: alone

After meeting Mary, Leo once told her that he was homeless, just to highlight the advantageous position of the elderly in owning a house.

Both Leo and the teenager were trapped in the dilemma of “sleepers”, so they had to meet the sexual requirements put forward by the “homeowner”. It can be seen that “sexual demand” in this group of relations is actually an extreme expression of “right exploitation”, which has little to do with sexual orientation.

Leo stops to chat up teenagers, which is based on his dominant position and tries to influence and control younger “men”, not a sexual attempt.

2. Ethical identity (father-in-law – Mary – Leo – baby)

Leo married Mary and gave birth to a son. Mary left her father and son.

In this relationship, the director truthfully depicts the process of genital close-up, sex and childbirth.

In the whole process, the father-in-law did not make any response, and even Mary’s departure seemed insignificant after completing her reproductive obligations.

After some hesitation, Leo established a close relationship with the baby.

3. Social identity (reminder – Leo – Beggar)

Reminders appear in the phone in the form of voice and have absolute power. Leo’s behavior of asking for remuneration is like begging of beggars.

Corresponding to the display of ethical identity in the countryside, the display of social identity is all in the city.

4. Gender identity (Leo – mysterious woman)

A mysterious female character appeared, and Leo’s two important decisions took place here.

For the first time, Leo hesitated and finally decided to raise his son alone.

The second time, Leo finally chose to escape from the drafter after writing works against his will.

Mysterious women represent the part of Leo’s “femininity”, which is also the reason why he is special compared with other “men”.

Break the border

Originally, the four identity descriptions were independent until the event of breaking the boundary occurred.

1. Power identity / ethical identity

Father in law drove to the old man’s house and found Leo.

The emergence of father-in-law broke the boundary of right / ethical identity. Therefore, there was an absurd plot that father-in-law asked Leo for sex. In fact, it only continued the form of “right exploitation” in power identity.

Father in law, as another old man who owns real estate, also wants to conquer the “heir”.

Although Leo refused his father-in-law, his attitude was not firm, which foreshadowed that he was deprived of all his identity.

2. Social identity / gender identity

The drafter came to the mysterious woman by boat and forced Leo to hand in the manuscript.

This move can be understood as that the drafter grasped the “weakness” of Leo’s “femininity” and coerced him to complete the script full of “masculinity”. (the script uses “masculine” statements such as real men, cleaning wounds with alcohol and pulling out knives)

In the process of Leo’s writing, the voice of the drafter having sex with the mysterious woman came, which clearly showed the reality that Leo was “exploited for rights”.

Although under the guidance of “femininity”, Leo did not force himself to complete the script. But the way he chose was escape rather than confrontation, which led him to a more passive situation.

Until he was robbed of his clothes by beggars, Leo’s social identity was completely erased.

3. Power identity / ethical identity / social identity / gender identity

Father in law and the boy appeared in the city and rescued Leo from the beggars.

Because of Leo’s instability and cowardice, he had nothing and had to accept the “shelter” of the old man. In return, he met the sexual needs of the old man before he died. After the old man died, Leo put on the old man’s clothes and sat down on the sofa like an old man. However, this did not bring him stability, and the police soon came to the door.

The three border breaking incidents all have a common detail, that is, the baby fell into the hands of others. On the first two occasions, he robbed the child from his father-in-law and the drafter respectively. However, in the end, he lost custody.

Keep upright

Leo, who lost all his identity, begged his father-in-law to take him in, but decided to live with the sheep because he thought he had lost his qualification to be a man.

After the death of the old man, his father-in-law and the young man formed a feeding relationship, and Leo’s son is under their control. It can be predicted that he will also become a part of the cycle of power and identity in the future.

Leo’s awakening was the moment he really saw the wolf. He had no fear. He suddenly realized that only by standing upright and fighting against him can he feel your strength and you will have a glimmer of vitality.

Look back at the first conversation between Leo and Mary.

Knowing that it is wrong and not resisting is fuelling mistakes.

The so-called laws of nature (the law of the jungle, gender inequality…) must be abandoned one by one in the process of human civilization, rather than finding excuses for their continued existence.

“Will you really be sad if the poisonous snake is extinct?”

So how do you stay upright?

The answer has been given in the first scene of the film, just before the title appeared.

Like a teenager, walk upright and never stop.

All you need is a little persistence and the courage not to be changed.
