“There is no doubt that all life is a process of destruction.”

——Fitzgerald’s prose collection collapse

The screen adaptation of the Great Gatsby has never been successful. The original novel is too well-known. It ranks second among the 100 best English novels of the 20th century selected by the American modern library. It is “the first step taken by American novels since Henry James” in the mouth of poet and literary critic T. S. Eliot. It is the last elegy in the jazz era. Its interpretation of the American dream transcends the years and has been selected into the Chinese Textbooks of American high schools. So in the United States, but no audience with secondary education is not familiar with this story.

In the summer of 2013, Australian Baz ruherman launched his fourth charge to the Great Gatsby. Time goes back to Long Island, New York in the 1920s. From the perspective of narrator Nick, we watched an overly noisy dream tragedy. I had no doubt that Baz ruherman could host a prosperous and colorful party before watching the film. The new edition of the Great Gatsby has indeed made great efforts in visual expression. Catherine Martin, one of the producers and the director’s wife, is responsible for the art design of the film. Prada’s gorgeous clothes and Tiffany’s jewelry are really pleasing to the eye.

The setting also fits the description of the original work to a great extent. Ash Valley, a must pass from long island to Manhattan, has a pair of meaningful eyes on the damaged and dim billboard. The residence of Tom and daisy in the film is a building in George’s colonial period, luxurious but flat, elegant and not publicized. Unable to squeeze into this hereditary territory, Gatsby castle, which settled in West Egg, is extremely extravagant and fashionable, and the style differences between new and old aristocrats are clear at a glance. Not to mention the lively scenes of several parties. Thanks to the blessing of 3D, the green light in front of Daisy’s house across the sea flashed like the green lantern.

As for the film soundtrack criticized by many fans and Jazz fans, such as the wide use of music director jay z and hip-hop, I don’t think it is the key to the success or failure of the film. If movies reflecting the 1920s can only use 1920s jazz (how about 1920s cameras?), Then “crazy primitive man” can’t even sing, can only cry? The soundtrack of Moulin Rouge, which Baz Luhmann was famous for in those years, was also a popular song puzzle – nirvana, Elton John, sting… And even adapted Madonna’s like a virgin. The opposition seemed to be less intense than it is now. Decoding and reshaping the colorful event a century ago with music that is easy to quickly establish contact with contemporary audiences is one of ruhman’s most distinctive directing styles. As long as everything serves the film itself, it is an interesting attempt. Especially when Gatsby happily led Daisy to play and laugh in the mansion, Lana del Ray’s voice in the background was desolate and naive, asking “will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” Sad but not sad, beautiful.

The formal success of the new edition of the Great Gatsby has attracted much attention, but it is difficult to hide its essential failure. As a reader of Fitzgerald, what I want to protest is the adaptation of the original book. This time, Baz Luhmann still invited his long-term screenwriter partner Craig Pierce. The two brothers have jointly created several of Luhmann’s most important works, including heroes of the dance country, Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet.

The so-called banner of “most loyal to the original” can only buy off the audience who have not read the original. Any reader who has read the Great Gatsby can catch the differences between the drifting away and the ultimate separation of flesh and blood everywhere in the film. Through the interaction between the psychologist and Nick, the film conveniently quotes a large number of original sentences, giving people the illusion of listening to audio books, but inexplicably disassembled and created a lot. For example, one of the most famous beginnings in the history of literature “when I was young and had little experience, my father taught me a word, which I still remember.” Only half of the quotation was changed to “try to think of people for the best.” What’s more, Baz ruherman wishfully took out all the details showing Gatsby’s disappointment and broken dreams after his reunion with Daisy, so that he fell deeply in love in his dream of love. In Fitzgerald’s novels, Gatsby has already seen everything about daisy. He is not Jack who did not drown on the Titanic. He is more sober than anyone. In the novel, Fitzgerald wrote, “There must have been some moments that afternoon when Daisy was far inferior to his dream. It was not her fault, but because his dream had great vitality. His dream transcended her and everything. He invested in the dream with a creative enthusiasm, constantly adding to it, decorated with every gorgeous feather. No amount of passion or vitality can escape Can’t catch up with the feelings that can be gathered in a person’s gloomy heart. ” And before going to the city for the summer, Gatsby said, “her voice is full of money.” Enough to tell everything.

CNN’s invited film critic Tom charitti’s summary of Baz Luhmann is a little harsh, but also very accurate. He believes that Luhmann’s understanding of literary works is always “not shy, romantic and enthusiastic superficial”. I would like to believe that Baz ruherman loves this novel and Gatsby very much. But it is the director’s kindness and kindness that makes Gatsby’s story not only incomplete, but lack the most important flavor in the film. Every time I reread the Great Gatsby, I will think of the good song in a dream of Red Mansions, “the humble room is empty. In those days, wat were full of beds; withered grass and withered poplar were used as a song and dance venue… After you sing, I came on stage and recognized that another country is my hometown. It’s ridiculous. In the end, I made wedding clothes for others.” Seeing him rise from the tall building, seeing him feast guests, seeing his building collapse. Without the disillusionment of dreams, “the Great Gatsby” can only become a third rate romantic story of an amorous rich man chasing girls for thousands of miles and his infatuation will never change.

Leonardo, who appeared in the Blue Rhapsody and fireworks, can only be a infatuated millionaire from the grass-roots. The heroine Kerry Mulligan, from “growth education” and “shame” to this one, is very suitable to play a material girl who is addicted to desire and naive, but she is still several orders of magnitude behind daisy. She is a kinder and simpler daisy. He is a more obsessed Gatsby. The chill in the story is covered by ruherman. Will the red wine mixed with Sprite be better? Baz Luhmann may have realized his dream as a reader, but he failed to live up to the original novel itself. At the end of the film, before Gatsby was shot, the telephone rang. He mistakenly thought it was daisy. In this way, he fell back into the gorgeous blue swimming pool in slow motion with hope. The corners of his mouth were happy and smiling. The director gave him a deserved death. The novel clearly pierced the bubble, “I have an idea that Gatsby himself does not believe that there will be a call, and he may not care. If so, he will feel that he has lost the old warm world and paid a high price for holding a dream for too long.” What a difference. No wonder a friend asked after watching the film, “what’s the greatness of Gatsby?”

At the end of the film, Nick finished the novel and signed the cover with a pen, connecting the story with the writer. In fact, Fitzgerald is not Nick, he is Gatsby. It is hard not to think of the story between the writer Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. When they first met, Zelda was a rich lady, and Fitzgerald, like Gatsby, was an unknown little officer. I don’t know where it comes from and go deep. Of course, he doesn’t have the fast-growing evil shortcut in the novel. If he wants to win the heart of a beautiful woman, he can only immerse himself in writing with a pen. It was not until this side of heaven became a best-selling novel and a great success that Zelda agreed to Fitzgerald’s proposal. They have become the most perfect pair in the social circle, grape wine luminous cup, singing from New York to Paris. Later, we can see Hemingway’s flowing feast. He firmly believes that Fitzgerald will no longer have great works after the Great Gatsby. The root cause is Zelda’s madness destroyed him. Fitzgerald was both in and out of the most gorgeous and indulgent jazz age. I feel both intoxicated and disgusted with the ever-changing life. I love his writing with sad tenderness when it is most prosperous. Finally, at the age of 44, Fitzgerald had a heart attack and died in a friend’s apartment in Los Angeles at dawn before Christmas.

The Great Gatsby doesn’t write the ending of careless Daisy, but I know Zelda’s. Eight years after Fitzgerald’s sudden death in Los Angeles, a fire broke out in Zelda’s mental hospital. It is said that there was a strong wind that day. She stood on the roof alone until she was swallowed by the fire. They were buried together, and the meaningful end of the Great Gatsby was engraved on the tombstone – we continued to push forward, sailing against the current, and being pushed back until we returned to the past.

For a long time, I had only a very vague concept of the American dream. Until I saw the schedule carefully kept by Gatsby’s father at the funeral of the Great Gatsby (Gatsby’s biological father doesn’t appear in this film, which I think is another great lack), I suddenly realized that the so-called American dream is as long as you work hard, You can live better. Gatsby, who claims to be the son of God, firmly believes that there are extraordinary arrangements in his life. When he kissed Daisy’s lips for the first time, all the imagination related to beauty in life condensed into the most concrete symbol. As long as you run faster and stretch your arms farther tomorrow, you can touch the green light on the other side one day. Gatsby is a fool among fools and a warrior among warriors. Just like the lyrics of Zhong Xiaoyang’s favorite, I love only one person all my life and only have one kind of sorrow all my life. Since ancient times, he is the one who hates in his spare time, and he is the one who smiles. He is really a man who takes dreams as his horse and cuts through thorns and thorns all the way. Of course, he is great.

Thank you for liking ~

About Daisy’s prototype, I think several people mentioned it. Just say a few more words.

Daisy’s prototype, according to the school, is Fitzgerald’s first girlfriend Geneva king. Many critics also believe that the prototype of Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy is the relationship between Jesus and Judas. In fact, I have no intention of researching who Daisy is, but every time I reread the Great Gatsby, “it’s hard not to think of the story between writer Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda”, so I wrote it at the end.

Zelda is too important for Fitzgerald’s creation. Not only Gatsby’s story, the female mental patient in tender night and Gloria in beauty and destruction can see her shadow more or less, haunting like ghosts.
