Film review:Translated by www.rabudo-ru.com

Kislovsky once said: “the closest thing to the spirit of humanity is fraternity. Perhaps we are all fraternity, because we always show generosity in our eyes…” the red love of three colors is such a film with fraternity as the main body: Valentina, a student and model, is always suspected by each other; Auguste, a law graduate pursuing Karin, found that his lover was lingering with other men, and his pure love was trampled on; The accident in fate involved the retired old judge who listened to others’ privacy into complex contradictions… The film also added many minor plots: the old judge wiretapped the phone despicably, young mark degenerated after discovering his illegitimate child identity, drug abuse, family betrayal, love betrayal, cool mother daughter family affection, and covert drug trade. Just like the gray tone that envelops the whole film (the director uses a lot of blue filters in blue, but not in red), the characters are in complex contradictions and entanglements that are difficult to get rid of, and life is so cold and lonely. However, red is still an important part of the film. Almost every scene will have a touch of red. “Red” pays more attention to light and framing than the other two. Each scene will have meaningful scenes, especially color, which is almost used as a language. Red lights symbolize danger; The red cherry on the coffee shop Juicer symbolizes mental trauma; The red jacket symbolizes love in memory. In addition, the dazzling jeep, the sign of the small shop, the title page of the book that slammed to the ground, the half closed door in the animal hospital, the huge advertising street view, and the frozen reality and past on the screen after the disaster. These strangely integrated red in the film remind us from time to time that the essential content conveyed by the film is the striking “red” inadvertently appeared, the red of affectionate fraternity.

One love and redemption

The Bible says: love our neighbors.

Kislovsky continues his consistent reverence for God in the film. The whole film takes “love” as the core.

In the film, the old judge asks a question: is there real love? When Valentina said that helping shopping could make the lonely mother feel better, the old judge mockingly pointed out that Valentina’s purpose was to get rid of her guilt and make herself feel better. In fact, it is a negation of love – People’s so-called love behavior is fundamentally for themselves.

It is obviously no accident that the new and old generations of judges appear in the film. He actually plays the role of judge – trying the unknown criminal acts of his neighbors by wiretapping. He is just unable to change anything. The old judge who believed in this view lived in emptiness and darkness, but was destined to have red in his life: the arrival of Valentina made him question this view. “I told myself it was disgusting after you left”, and he stopped listening and reported the case. With further communication with Valentina, he finally saw the light. In fact, Valentina tried the old judge morally, and Auguste, a young judge with similar experience, became the third judge to try the old judge legally. However, trial alone is not enough. Remember what the red in the final freeze frame is? It is the lifeguard’s red life jacket, which implicitly points out the fundamental purpose of red – “Redemption”. Red fraternity! Red redemption! People are not born selfish. The old judge said that loving others is to make ourselves feel better. That’s why we love others. Loving others is to love ourselves. Saving others also saves ourselves. The orange lights that appear from time to time in the film seem to symbolize people’s love. When they doubt the world, the lamp’s battery ran out and went out, and the old judge who rekindled hope said to Valentina, “I have installed the battery.”

Life is difficult. There will be dark corners in sunny places, but we can’t deny life because of darkness, because we can’t deny love without love. Maybe your neighbor or the person you accidentally pass by is the lover you’re looking for, but – it’s far away. At the beginning of the film, the track pushing lens of the telephone line is full of dense dialogue. It is tacitly accepted that the telephone, as a product of scientific and technological development, does bring convenience to people. However, the people at both ends of the telephone are also close at hand? People can’t communicate their hearts and feelings on the phone, but they have many misunderstandings and suspicions in their life: Valentina will be questioned by the other party every time she calls her boyfriend. High technology has become the carrier of people’s alienation. It is this living state of the modern world that makes it more difficult for people to communicate with each other. They encounter indifference, desolation, loss and despair of love, so there is a crime – a crime derived from love. This crime may not be tried, but can be redeemed by love, as long as we are more honest, more tolerant and have love in our hearts, hopeful. As the director said: human beings abide by all kinds of commandments, not afraid of God’s punishment, but more importantly, out of the needs of human nature, people always try to surpass themselves. This is the final purpose of all moral education, not to please God or please good people.

II. Fate and reincarnation

The ethereal music composed of sopranos and orchestras throughout the film tells us that the world is mysterious, inevitable and accidental, and fate and choice appear repeatedly in the film. The story is made up of so many accidental connections: the dropped book just turned to the examination question, the radio broke down, so he ran into the judge’s dog and missed his girlfriend’s phone because he bought cigarettes… The repeated gambling machines seem to indicate that all this is just a coincidence. However, Valentina said: I know why I won. So we have to stop and think – are these really just coincidences? Obviously, the film is actually marked with a deep brand of fatalism. Valentina told her boyfriend that if she hadn’t run out at halftime, they wouldn’t know each other. Indeed, in many cases in life, it is those small details that have changed your life. But on the other hand, if those are coincidences? What if it’s destiny? The book tape is destined to break, the radio is destined to go wrong, Xidan is destined to run out at that time, and the fate of the old judge and Augustus is destined to be the same… This wonderful fate reached its peak when the shipwreck was rescued: Valentine’s startling face on the red background coincided with her “life and breath” advertising poster, as if it had been predicted.

“Reincarnation” is another surreal image besides fate in the film. Augustus is a reincarnation of the old judge 30 years later: reincarnation of blond girlfriend, reincarnation of landing book, reincarnation of betrayal, and even reincarnation of the creature – Sidan who gave birth to a dog. It seems that what follows is the emptiness and helplessness of reincarnation – Augustus will live a lonely life like the old judge.

The old judge said, “I can choose to listen or not. You can also choose to say or not, but the results are the same.” We seem to be shrouded in a God’s power, and people in destiny are so fragile: love is fragile, happiness is always closely connected with pain, gathering and dispersing, ownership and lack are out of control, just like the originally predicted sunny weather will suddenly blow violently. Under the control of fate, three individuals living in the same time and space are independent and cross each other, resulting in different life events, but their fate is tangled and influenced by each other: Valentina, who is interlinked with the old judge, was born in different times, and Auguste and Valenti, who repeat the fate of the old judge, are neighbors but do not know each other. Too many good and bad things happen every day, and you may be next to them. You can’t do most things because you’re not God after all. So the old judge didn’t care about anything. He listened to the dark ugliness under bright clothes, witnessed the ugliness and hypocrisy of human nature, and laughed at all the so-called goodness and beauty. He can’t change anything. He got nothing.

The old judge told us that if life was not perfect, God would make mistakes, which led him and Valentina to miss 30 years. He was completely disappointed in life. So Valentina told him that everything he did was wrong. Human nature is not evil, but it is inevitable to be weak. There are some things you can choose not to give up. Their two souls interact with each other, making the audience stay in the thinking of life, and human nature. There will always be people dead and missing in a storm, but there will always be people rescued. At the end of the film, Valentina and Auguste walk out side by side, depend on each other occasionally, and the invariable repetition is changed. Does it mean that they have corrected the mistakes made by God and can finally be together? In short, the film shows the despair of fate, although it does not give an answer, but it leaves us hope. Even the silent heart of the old judge is looking forward to the sunshine of hope. Only one minute of light is so beautiful. Can “love” also be reincarnated?

Three life aesthetics

Hold out your hand and the world will become different. Taking human destiny as the starting point, the path of human degradation and leap may change between this idea: that idea will intervene in history with Satan’s separation, or inherit the process of God’s creation, which we may decide. As kislovsky said, “everything is doomed. We can only grasp today.” The palms of Valentina and the old judge met through the window. At that moment, the gap between time and space disappeared and their hearts merged.

The trembling old lady in blue always couldn’t reach the recycling box and plug the glass bottle in. The heroine saw it, but turned a blind eye; The hero in white also saw it and could only show sympathy: Valentine saw it, walked up without hesitation and helped her put the bottle into the recycle bin. After depicting life with a sense of fragmentation and disobedience, Kieslowski finally expressed his affirmation and hope for love. Love is like loving yourself. In many cases, there is nothing we can do, but we can always use love to change something, save others and ourselves. After scenes of chaos, there is a colorful movement – redemption, the beauty of life, maybe that’s it.
